About our ‘Sounds of Place’ project

Cornwall not only has its own distinct language but it has wonderful range of dialects. There was a time when you could not only tell someone was Cornish from their accent but you could distinguish their locality, for example, Newlyn versus St Ives. Sadly these dialects are dying out and with them the traditional way of pronouncing a place name.

This project aims to create a permanent archive of the local dialect for a place and is a project initiated by the Rescorla Centre in conjunction with Cornish Story.

The Rescorla Centre is a thriving hub for Cornish culture in mid Cornwall. There are regular Cornish Study days as well as a Saturday Kitchen where people can enjoy traditional food whilst listening to dialect stories and music. It holds a popular annual festival promoting Cornish culture and a unique community dance called the Rescorla Snail Creep.

Cornish Story aims to promote the sharing of knowledge about Cornwall and the global diaspora. It is a wonderful archive of past and present articles about Cornwall and also hosts some interesting online talks and discussions.
